he exotic aromas of Chinese cuisine tantalised the appetites of diners at Madam Kwong’s Restaurant early on the morning of August 7. Undeterred by the icy wind, members of The Christchurch Zhonghua Chinese Society and guests hosted a breakfast to welcome the Prime Minister of New Zealand John Key back to his hometown. As each delicious course was presented, the Prime Minister, attended by Nicky Wagner, Gerry Brownlee plus candidates Nuk Korako and Matt Doocey, addressed the attendees, who responded with enthusiastic applause. With breakfast pangs satisfied, it was time for everyone, table by table, to be presented to and pose for photographs with Mr Key.

The mother of Richie McCaw, who teaches in Opawa, is one of three judges who will select New Zealand’s most inspiring teachers next month. Margaret McCaw, has been a teacher for 35 years, and currently teaches at St Mark’s School. See She said that, as the mother of Inside: the All Blacks captain, she understood the pressures that both students and teachers faced. “Teachers have a key role in developing children to their full potential. One of the most rewarding aspects to the role is seeing the positive change that occurs when a student grows through education. I am really looking forward to helping to recognise the great work some of my colleagues have been doing and the impact it has made on young lives.” Nominations close next week

Warehouse Stationery CEO Pejman Okhovat said the initiative was established to bring greater recognition to one of the nation’s most essential service providers. “For those of us lucky enough to have been inspired by someone in the education system the rewards are long lasting and the desire to learn is a something which never leaves us. We are excited to be involved in championing the role of teachers in New Zealand and encouraging them in the great work they do.” For more information, to vote or to nominate a teacher, visit www.inspiringteachers.co.nz. Residents in dark over tricky intersection •From page 1 But Whincops Rd resident Diane Dick said the changes could cause fatal accidents, if people did not realise the stop signs had been removed. “With such a volume of traffic there, I can see it being lethal.” She said that visibility at the intersection was already limited, because of the number of trees around it. She believed that something like a roundabout was needed at the intersection, to slow traffic approaching from all sides.

She said she understood the desire to make changes at the intersection as soon as possible to deal with growing traffic volumes, but she believed that community consultation was essential. “When you put something like this to a group there could be someone who thinks differently to you and comes up with a unique way to solve the problem, whereas if you rush these things through then you might have to go back and reverse it or do something differently, and it

could cause a lot of problems in the future.” Halswell Residents Association member Ross McFarlane said that the road was the most direct route for many Lincoln and east Prebbleton residents to get into the city. He believed that significant road upgrades would be needed to solve the problem. He said he regularly read through the community board agenda the week before the meeting, which was the only reason he realised the changes were

proposed. “Had it not been noticed prior to the meeting, a decision would have been made and we would have been left having to back-track to try to change that decision.” Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said both the community and the community board should have been consulted earlier on the change. He did not believe that the change would significantly effect congestion in the area, calling it a “minor tweak”.

Mushroom jobs sprouting Sixty jobs will be created through a $120 million redevelopment and expansion project at a Hornby mushroom farm. The second stage of the Wilmers Rd Meadow Mushrooms farm development was opened last week. The farm will be able to produce an extra 37,000kg of mushrooms a week through the expansion. Meadow Mushrooms chief executive John Barnes said the development demonstrated the company’s confidence in the future market and commitment to the industry. “It’s also an important milestone in the regional economy, underpinning Canterbury’s reputation as a world renowned food growing region.” Meadow Mushrooms currently employ 480 staff and produces on average 150,000kg of freshly handpicked mushrooms every week. Fresh mushrooms are the third highest selling vegetable in New Zealand, behind potatoes and tomatoes. Mr Barnes said New Zealanders currently consume an average of 2kg of mushrooms per person, each year. “New Zealand consumers recognise the nutritional value of mushrooms, their versatility and their importance to a wide

On Monday, July 21, Western News reported that the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board had stopped funding youth projects until the criteria for the way they are currently funded was clarified. That was incorrect. The board is currently examining the funding criteria but it is still accepting applications for assistance. Those applications will still be considered for approval as the criteria for the funding model is examined. It was also reported that board member Debbie Mora did not believe an application for funding from a 23-year-old Canterbury University student should be approved. This was also incorrect. Ms Mora took part in general debate on the funding issue at a community board meeting but did not oppose the application as was reported. The student had sought $450 to help fund an eight-week internship in Indonesia studying autism there. The application was approved by the community board. Seasoned songstress Isabella Miller Bell left her Scotland home at 16 with just a pound note to her name. Now ‘Ma Bell’ is a seasoned singer and the woman behind the Sumner Cabaret La Vie. She speaks to Emma-Jane McLennan about her boys, busking and Buddhism. Isabella, you have a lovely accent, where are you from? I grew up in Greenock in Renfrewshire – now called Inverclyde [in Scotland] – in the 1960s. It was pretty tough, we grew up in a council housing estate, just after the war. In a way it was great, there were lots of parties, but there was also a lot of alcohol problems. I had six brothers and two sisters, and my father was a whaler so he was away a lot. My mother was basically a solo parent, but the neighbours always pitched in and helped. I finished school at 15 and left home at 16. What made you leave? There was a lot of big social family problems going on. A friend of mine, her parents had just split up, and she was going to London to live with her mother. She asked me to come with her, so I left and stayed with her mother and partner for six years. I left with a blanket, a pound note and a guitar. What did you plan to do from there? In those days there was plenty of work, after the war. The family took us [my friend and I] to a labour exchange and I became

a factory worker. I worked in different factories from age 15 to 24. The first one, before I left, was the Greenock Ropeworks. You used to have massive slabs of tree bark, they had to be lifted, flattened and oiled. The rope would come through flattened and oiled, and I had to push it into the barrel. You could never stop the production line, but the older women in the factory used to sabotage the machines so we’d get a break. The worst part about that job was you’d smell of the oil and get oil blisters, and at 15 I started to think about boys and how I looked. I soon left that job and went to another factory. I have had about 40 different jobs over my life. I

have been waitressing and I’m even a trained counsellor. So how did you get into performing? I started very, very young. Music was very much a part of

my background. My mother was a lovely singer and her brother was a concert hall singer. My father’s family were performers, so the two of them [my parents] loved to play the guitar and sing. My first performance was at a house concert. I would only have been about four. People would gather for a house party or house concert – well really it started as a concert and ended as a party. There might be 30 people there, and you’d have a door charge to get in. When I left home and lived in London, I spent time in music circles and busking. Through busking I got offered a spot at the Manly Summer Festival in Sydney.

SEASONED PERFORMER: Isabella Miller Bell today.

has come a long way brought the boys up there. What do you like to do in your spare time? I wash dishes, I garden, I go out and listen to other performers. I’m also a Buddhist practitioner. How did you pick up Buddhism, was that on your travels? Yes, I have travelled through the east a couple of times, and I guess with leaving home early I have always been curious and a bit of a soul searcher. I’m not very religious, Buddhism is more of a science of the mind. It’s a good refuge for myself. So how do you run the Sumner Cabaret? That’s been running for three years now. I always try to get local performers, and I always feature myself – kind of like Alfred Hitchcock – he always gives himself a pat on the back in movies. Usually there are four acts, and sometimes there is burlesque or puppetry. The concert experience for the performer and audience is very different to a restaurant or bar. They’re not background any more, the people are actually there to hear the music. So how much longer will the show go for? I’ve got one more show still to do this year, but because I’m moving around it is hard to organise. My house is being repaired now, so I’ve moved out and everything is hard to

SINGING IN SYDNEY: Isabella Miller Bell at the Manly Summer Festival in 1982, her first professional role. How did that happen, were you approached on the street? No, I went to Sydney to do busking and in those days you had to get a licence to busk. That included an audition, so I did the busking audition for the council and they liked it. It just happened that they were planning the festival at the time, so they asked me to be part of it. I was probably in my late 20s then. How did you end up in Christchurch? I lived in London for some time, and I was a great traveller. I travelled three times around Europe and eastern, and met a man from Christchurch along

the way. We travelled together a lot and came to Christchurch in 1978, then back to Aussie. In 1987 we moved permanently to Christchurch. Could you tell me about your family? I have two sons, Sean and Jaime. One’s an architect in Adelaide and the other is a digital producer in Sydney. I have a big family back in Scotland but I don’t see them so much. The boys’ father, my ex-husband now, went to Australia and I guess the boys went too so they could see a bit of the world. Where do you live now? I live in Redcliffs, I’ve lived here for 10 years probably. I was originally in Somerfield, and

access. I think I’ll do another show around October, November, December. I’ve got one scheduled in the back of my mind for before the end of the year. I might start focusing on younger artists, to give them the boost they need in front of an audience. What would your advice be to young performers wanting to make it big? The ‘making it big’ is a tricky one. I haven’t made it big, so I haven’t found the answer. Lets say you’re a songwriter – like Lorde for instance – you have to have the right look, be in the right age group and have all the right people around you to make it happen. Even if you make it big, it doesn’t last forever. So why do you continue with music? It has to be about the love for music itself. It’s being there for the community and lifting their spirits. I did have a good go but I didn’t make it commercial. I was a late bloomer, you could say. One of the Buddhist principles is you work for the good of all, and I try to work for that. I know it sustains the spirits of the audience that comes in, and at the end of the day I think that’s what it’s about. Music is also about storytelling, and with my huge life I have a story. You’re just trying to connect with someone else’s story as well.

Boy racers shut out of Hornby street BY GABRIELLE STUART

Drivers of vehicles caught on a Hornby street at night without a legitimate reason to be there can now be fined. Sir James Wattie Drive has been added to the city council Prohibited Times on Roads bylaw, which already covers about 50 streets across the city. Between the hours of 10pm and 5am, only “legitimate users” can use the streets. The street was included last week at the request of the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board. Community board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton believed it was a positive move for the community. The streets put forward to be added have been highlighted by police due to high numbers of complaints about dangerous or nuisance behaviour, or persistent problems which have remained over a long period of time. Ms Broughton said the street had been highlighted by the police as a problem area. Managers of businesses on Sir James Wattie Drive spoken to by the Western News said they supported the law, but had not noticed significant problems themselves. Maxwell Contract Warehous-

ing logistics manager Jeff Knowles said the warehouse was only open during the day, so staff generally didn’t notice any problems on the road. “I’m not aware of too many problems but I do support it, I think it’s a great idea.” MOVE Logistics site manager Sheldon Williams agreed. “I do support it because it means less probability of stones being kicked up and hitting our cars parked on the street. That’s always a possibility because cars do speed on the road.” He said the business had been based on the street for about five

years, and there had been no major problems with boy racers that he was aware of. The street will be restricted between the hours of 10pm and 5am to legitimate users, which includes business employees, residents, and people with a genuine reason for being on the street. Anyone else caught on the street within those hours can be fined $750. About 50 Christchurch streets are already covered by the bylaw, with the biggest cluster of roads included covering areas behind the Christchurch Airport, through Yaldhurst and McLeans Island. Local streets already restricted under the bylaw include clusters of roads in Hornby industrial areas off Halswell Junction Rd and in Wigram, north of the Southern Motorway.

Work starts on new child cancer building After months of working from car boots and public libraries, staff at the Child Cancer Foundation was excited to see work start on their new building last week. The building will be constructed on the foundation’s original Cashel St site, and is expected to open early next year. Since their building was destroyed in the February 2011 earthquake, the Christchurch team have worked across the city from their own homes, the boots of their cars, the Westpac Community and Business Hub, bedrooms at YMCA Christchurch, cafes and libraries. For the last two years staff have used a building provided by the Christchurch International Airport as a base. The original family place was visited by an average of 25 families per month as well as staff, volunteers and health professionals. Child Cancer Foundation chief executive Robyn Kiddle said that being close to the hospital would be a bonus for the team.

Shopping at

Riccarton

Riccarton is more than just

a destination in itself

T

he three years since the earthquakes have seen the fortunes of some areas of Christchurch rise and rise. Riccarton in particular has become the hub of much of the city’s social, shopping, travel and educational life. In close proximity to the university and several schools - both primary and high Riccarton is a desirable location for students of all ages and their families. Everything you could want is available almost at your doorstep. One of the largest features is surely Westfield Shopping Mall with its fashion, electronics,

homeware stores, a supermarket and busy food halls. Riccarton Road itself is wellstocked with a wide variety of international restaurants, fast-food outlets and one-off shops. It is home to plenty of small and large businesses, from banks to beauty therapists. As if that weren’t enough, Riccarton boasts some of Christchurch’s top leisure activities. The Riccarton House and Bush is more than the homestead itself. It also has some of the loveliest green space with the historic bush walk and is home to the Farmers Market at the weekend. Just up the road is Riccarton Park, with highlights including the New Zealand

Cup Meeting in November, Grand National Carnival in August and the Autumn Racing Carnival, and is also a premier function centre. Back at the mall is the multi-screen cinema which features blockbusters and is a home to the NZ International Film Festival. Riccarton is more than just a destination in itself, however. Its excellent bus service means the city centre and the airport are highly accessible and just a short ride away. But if you want to stay, there are several motels which cater for a wide range of visitors. With so much going on there, why would you want to leave?

Korowai cloaks presented to school Two handcrafted korowai cloaks have been presented to the South Hornby School kapa haka group by the Hornby Harcourts Four Seasons team. Kapa haka has proven to be a popular initiative at the school, with more than 100 students opting into the kapa haka group. But the school still does not yet have kapa haka group uniforms for all the students involved. Principal Simon Moriarty said he believed the “explosion of popularity” of kapa haka at the school was due to the people who organised the group for the students. “It is a real community spirit. I love the fact that every student in the middle and senior school has the option to be part of kapa haka. The inclusive nature of the group and the school as a whole, is what makes it so special. He said the donation was greatly appreciated by the students who, along with dedicated staff and community members, worked tirelessly to practice and perform a wide

Bazza’s Barber opens early

in handy location “It’s an easy stop for people heading into town as there’s plenty of parking out the front and I have quite a few West Coasters stopping in on their way down south.” - Barber Bazza

L

ook out for the iconic red, white and blue barber’s pole as you are heading into town past Villa Maria College and you will find Bazza’s Barber. Located there for three months, barber Bazza, or Barry Grose, may look familiar to many as he has owned several barbershops in Christchurch, including one in New Regent Street, and has recently returned from Australia. Arriving at Bazza’s Barber is like stepping into a light and air man cave with racing and rugby nostalgia filling the walls, plenty of men’s magazines and a newspaper and even a television playing sport to watch. At Bazza’s Barber, you will not only receive a friendly professional service from Barry but also a great cut or trim and great value for money at only $15 a cut. The handy location makes the barber shop the perfect stop, and being open from 7.30am on week days is proving popular for many of Barry’s customers, old and new.

True

“It’s an easy stop for people heading into town as there’s plenty of parking out the front and I have quite a few West Coasters stopping in on their way down south,” says Barry. The red, white and blue barber’s pole has been around for years and years, says Barry, and is a great way to let people know where barber shops are. “It comes from a time when barbers were expected to perform bloodletting and other medical procedures to heal the sick - red represented blood, white represented bandages and the blue was for males,” says Barry, although he promises that there won’t be any blood at his shop. For a highly professional and friendly service, visit Bazza’s Barber. Barry opens the doors at 7.30am from Monday to Saturday, giving customers plenty of time to have a cut or a tidy-up on their way to work. Bazza’s Barber is also open until 1pm on Saturdays at 30c Yaldhurst Road. Look out for the barber’s pole at the door. Phone: 021 451 577.

Breakfast with John Key

he exotic aromas of Chinese cuisine tantalised the appetites of diners at Madam Kwong’s Restaurant early on the morning of August 7.

Krill oil

- no1 for good health

A

ll our body cell membranes are made up of phospholipids that are exactly the same phospholipids as available in krill oil. These phospholipids available in krill are its big advantage over fish oil that is in a triglyceride form, which must be converted by our liver to phospholipid form to be able to have benefits to our cell membranes. This conversion of triglycerides to phospholipids is inefficient, and a much larger dose of fish oil is needed for the same benefits as a much smaller dose of krill oil. Some research has shown krill oil to be 48 times more potent than fish oil. Another benefit of krill oil is it contains astaxanthin, one of the most potent antioxidants known. The secret is therefore the phospholipid and astaxanthin content rather than just the amount of krill oil in the soft gel capsule. For more information, phone Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy on 388 5757. We are happy to help!

or many people, falling pregnant can be more difficult than they expect. Fertility Associates is New Zealand’s leading provider of fertility diagnosis, support and treatment. The Christchurch clinic’s team of CREI qualified Fertility Specialists is committed to helping create families and offer full fertility assessments, as well as world-class technology to help people secure the best possible chance of falling pregnant. “If it’s not happening quickly, it’s best not to delay,” explains Dr Sarah Wakeman, obstetrician and gynaecologist and CREI Fertility Specialist from Fertility Associates. There are many factors that can contribute to a delay in conceiving. With study, career and travel to focus on, women are commonly starting a family at over 30 years of age. Unfortunately, as age increases, the chance of conception decreases, which is why it is vital to know when you should be asking for help to conceive. Fertility Associates have developed the biological clock on their website (visit them www.fertilityassociates.co.nz) to help women identify both the chances of a successful

conception at any age and when the time is right to seek assistance if not falling pregnant. Women over 35 years of age should wait no more than six months before seeking the advice of a GP, more advanced tests for both partners usually require a specialist’s input. Similarly, women who easily conceived a previous pregnancy may encounter diffculty conceiving again and should seek help if they have been trying for six to 12 months to expand their family without success. It is also important to remember that male problems account for approximately a third of cases of fertility delay, so it is recommended that men see a doctor too. Often there are no signs of a male fertility problem until further assessment and testing is done. Fertility Associates is located in the Hiatt Chambers at St Georges Medical Centre, 249 Papanui Road, Phone 375 4000 or 0800 10 282 28. T

he team of five Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, including a fertility specialist, collectively known as Christchurch Obstetrics and Gynaecology Association, or COGA, provide women with a full maternity service, from pre-conception to postnatal care. Team member Angela Beard says, while pregnant women may choose to have a midwife as their lead maternity carer, it’s important they consider an obstetrician as well because these are qualified medical practitioners who have specialised in providing comprehensive pregnancy care. “We encourage a shared care arrangement with midwives. We work with them and have a huge respect for them,” Angela says. “However, if there are complications during the pregnancy, labour or birth, we can manage those. Midwives are free to refer patients to us if they believe a specialist is needed, especially in the case of high-risk patients.” Women can also be referred to COGA by their GP, or can make an appointment themselves, she says. “We offer a one-off initial consultation

at no charge and provide the patient with a management plan for her pregnancy. By coming to us, women can bypass the waiting time for an appointment at the hospital.” The team includes Colin Conaghan, Jane Fielder, Michelle Bailey, Geeta Singh and Angela Beard. All are Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Michelle has a subspecialist CREI (fertility qualification). Every client is seen by all the team members at some time, ensuring that when she goes into labour, she will know the obstetrician who attends the birth. “It’s a team approach and we get great feedback from our clients. The women really like it,” Angela says. All deliveries are done at Christchurch Women’s Hospital because of its facilities and service, she says, adding that clients with private insurance are usually covered for obstetric care, with most policies now covering those expenses. COGA is located in the Hiatt Chambers at St Georges Medical Centre, 249 Papanui Road, phone 375 4060. For more information visit coa.org.nz.

Air force museum, Vbase hospitality award finalist The partnership between the Wigram Air Force Museum and its catering provider Vbase, has been recognised as a tourism and hospitality finalist in the 2014 Champion Canterbury Business Awards. Following the Canterbury earthquakes, the air force museum and Vbase worked to attract high-value business tourism events back to Christchurch. A new building featuring 1500 sq m of new conference space has provided a venue for conferences, trade exhibitions and gala dinners. In the 10 months to the end of 2013, the museum hosted 91,000 people attending 250 separate events. Museum director Therese Angelo said the new building was designed solely for air force museum use, but the earthquakes created new demands and a large area of the gallery space was set aside as a temporary venue. “The partnership was created through shared motivation to ensure we not only provided the local community with a place to come and enjoy events, but also created a wider economic benefit to the region through convention business. “The loss of the convention centre took with it a $100 million a year industry, so offering the remaining space as a temporary convention centre to help rebuild some of that industry seemed like a great idea. “Vbase’s expertise in attracting and hosting great events was an essential part of the success of the venue.” The venue is set to operate until the new convention centre is open. The building will then revert to its intended use as an aircraft display gallery. In 2013 the venue contributed an estimated $3 million to the local economy, bringing business events to the city and associated accommodation, food, beverage, transport and retail spend. The venues are regularly provided free of charge or at a discounted rate for charitable activities. The winners of the Champion Canterbury Business Awards will be announced on September 17.

PIT Trades graduates are taking on the world by impressing the directors of some of the top firms in the field. Recent graduate Tyrone Hellyer works at EPL, one of Australasia’s top manufacturing firms, as a toolmaking, fitting and turning engineer. Hellyer did a six months pretrades course through CPIT Trades and, after finishing, was taken on as an apprentice at EPL. He has now finished his apprenticeship and is working full-time for EPL. “EPL has been brilliant for me. I’m designing things on the computer, creating 3D models to make sure it works and then taking that information from on-screen and making it.” Hellyer says the CPIT course gave him the “foot in the door” to land his dream job at EPL. “I think the course helped me to understand what engineering is all about and to then be able to apply these skills on a daily basis,” he says. Managing director of EPL Tom Thomson says the company has a long-standing relationship with CPIT. “The CPIT tutors are involved with different businesses, making sure they’re in tune with what employers like myself want,” he says. “CPIT are constantly keeping at the cutting-edge of the latest developments

hether you are aged two or 92, the CSM has a fun and inspiring course that will meet your needs after school or on a Saturday morning. Our mega-music morning package is ideal for younger children - they can learn an instrument in a group lesson, participate in a fun theory lesson and join our Take Orff with Music classes all on a Saturday morning and will be well supervised throughout if parents are busy with other activities. Group lessons are a great way to learn. Students can make good friends and there is a strong incentive to keep up with others. The teacher can tailor fun and educational activities involving all the students in the group.

and the staff we have had come through CPIT are second to none.” Thomson believes CPIT graduates, such as Hellyer, can hold their own anywhere in the world. “Tyrone is just one of the more recent examples of how young people come in here and the world is their oyster. They can do whatever they want to do. It really is up to them.”

How a spelling error gave Cleveland its name

n 1796, a community of American settlers in Ohio developed into a town. The elders decided to call their town Cleaveland, after General Moses Cleaveland, a land surveyor who marked out the town’s boundaries. In 1831 the town’s first proper newspaper was formed. The editor wanted to make a big splash with the first edition, so he proclaimed the formation of The Cleveland Advertiser. There wasn’t enough width on the front page to put the big masthead type in one line. So he made an instant decision to leave out the first A in Cleaveland. No one seemed to notice and the incorrect spelling stuck to the newspaper and city it served. “Checking spelling is always important,” said Brian Morris, Principal of New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “Whether a mistake is deliberate or accidental, the impact can last for years. “That’s what also happened to the town of Novi. When stage coaches rolled out of Detroit, there were designated stopping points where passengers could alight or board the coach. The sixth stopping point had a simple trail sign ‘No VI’. Over time, people who didn’t understand Roman numerals simply called the place NOVI.” Fastidious spellers who want to become professional proofreaders and book editors should request the free information pack from NZIBS Proofreading Institute. hen a friend recommended Jonathan Milne’s book ‘Go! The Art of Change’ to Anne Bannock, she looked into studying at The Learning Connexion the school of art and creativity, based in Wellington which Jonathan founded and directs. She realised that its study-from-home part-time option suited her down to a tee. “My life-long ambition was to go to an art school and to be part of the creative energy that goes with it, to enter a new world of

understanding modern art and new ideas,” says Anne Bannock. Situated in picturesque Ngatimoti, artist Anne has made a studio retreat that caters to her creativity and to the public. “My studio is a converted cow shed which serves as my studio and gallery, and is open to the public in the summer.” The Advanced Diploma programme has been the best programme of study for Anne to follow, allowing her to discover new techniques and skills to add to her extensive creative repertoire. “Everyone I have met has been helpful, especially the tutors. I have met some students when I attended a block class and now I follow their progress via the magic of the workroom, TLC’s on-line student forum.” If you’d like to enquire about studying at The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity, call us on 0800 278 769, or email us at admissions@tlc. ac.nz.

Getting paid in NZ$, UK£ and US$ has its benefits. “Being 12 hours ahead of Europe gives our proofreaders a huge advantage,” said Morris. “Publishing is a 24/7 industry. Our people get paid ‘overnight service’ rates even though they mostly work 10am to 2pm in New Zealand. This suits parents with children at school.” Journalism training is also available.

GARDENING

Plan ahead for spring ENERGY-EFFICIENT

August may be a slow time in the vege patch in some respects, but there are a few things you can get on with in the weeks ahead that will put you in good stead for some bumper crops in the spring. What to plant in August: (seedlings only), broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, perpetual spinach, silverbeet and garlic. Prepare now and protect against pests. Plant the right companion flowers in August to attract beneficial insects into your garden, ready for when the pests turn up in spring! If you only have a small vege patch you may want to plant the companion flowers in pots, by doing this you can also move them around the patch, putting them close to any vegetables that pests have taken a liking to. There are many companion plants you can use, here are my top three. • Phacelia has little purpley-blue flowers that produce an abundance of pollen which attracts hoverflies. The Hoverfly larvae will be your own little army of natural allies for a number of vege garden pests including aphids, scale insects, mealy bugs and psyllids. • French marigolds are

In addition to planting beneficial companions, it is a good idea to let some of your winter vegetables such as broccoli, bok choy, pak choy and mustard lettuce go to seed, their flowers will attract the beneficial companions as well. Start small – if you haven’t planted seeds before, give it a go now. By the time your seeds are ready to plant out as seedlings we will be well into spring and you will have saved yourself a packet. Collect up some old yoghurt pots, egg cartons and seedling trays and recycle all your old newspapers too. It’s time to sow cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, silverbeet, celery and spinach. Later on in August, you can sow tomatoes, capsicum, melon and cucumber.

fantastic repellers of both soil living pests and flying pests. A hardy, annual plant, french marigolds should have their dead flowers regularly removed to encourage new growth. They have the ability to deter soil living nematodes as well as whitefly, and white cabbage butterfly. Known as a soil cleanser, you can just dig the remains into the soil once the plant has died. • Sage is a fantastic culinary herb, and also does wonders for the vege garden. Grown as a border or in a container, its fragrant leaves will attract beneficial bees into the vege patch and repel pests such as carrot fly and cabbage moths simultaneously. As a perennial it is still protecting your plants during autumn and winter when some of the other

The importance of

air quality

T

he quality of the air we breathe affects our health and ability to perform. We breathe in and out approximately 20,000 litres of air every day. It is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation. Ventilation is the process of air exchange to provide the necessary air quality that meets the needs of the occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, however as winter approaches, we start to shut up out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline. Ventilation includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of

W

air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter creates a healthy environment in which to live and work. In case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or is ineffective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed. To ensure the quality of your air, contact the experts. Smooth-Air Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-Air offers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both commercial and domestic markets. They have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to differing requirements.

Strong comeback on and off court for tennis

T

he last 12 months has seen a continued resurgence in many areas of the sport of tennis in Canterbury. For the second year in a row, playing numbers have risen. Our members clubs are doing a great job of attracting new players – young and old and the continued rebuild of club facilities is being undertaken with a great spirit in “Clubland” - the heart and soul of our game. This upcoming summer, new courts will come on line in Sumner. Redcliffs and Halswell completed their court resurfacing last season, Shirley are progressing well with a new clubhouse which will hopefully be

open early in 2015 and the fringe areas of Christchurch are also experiencing significant growth as Christchurch grows in new fresh directions with a new court complex at Tai Tapu opened late last year and Prebbleton refreshing their courts. Competitively, Tennis Canterbury has shown that its junior players (now being able to again train year round with the interim reinstatement of the Z Energy Wilding Park Indoor Centre) are fierce competitors. Success may have been limited in terms of individual National Championship titles last season, but collectively our Junior

Teams made giant strides to put the Tennis Canterbury Region back on the map in terms of results at the recent Tennis New Zealand National Teams Events. After failing to win a title in 2013 our players achieved their best results since the earthquakes with wins in the 12’s and 14’s Boys, Silver medals in both 16’s events and Bronze in the Girls 12’s. It’s this collective strength which is

creating a great buzz – whether children are picking up rackets for the first time or older players are rediscovering their enjoyment of the sport after other things in life have taken priority. The sport is certainly in great heart. Our clubs are keen to get their communities to utilise their great facilities either from a recreation or a more competitive sporting standpoint.

Like you, we love to serve. For over 20 years, ASB has been an enthusiastic sponsor and partner to Tennis Canterbury. You’ve given us a lot of proud moments and in return we have tailored banking packages to meet members’ specific needs. To set up the right banking match for you, visit any ASB branch or call Warren Oliver, ASB Canterbury mobile lending manager on 027 338 0977. Succeed on.

I

t’s difficult to find a spare tennis court in Christchurch on a Friday night or a Saturday morning as Tennis Canterbury’s Junior Interclub Competition continues to attract growing numbers. Innovations bought in around five years ago to introduce low compression balls to younger grades has seen players retained in the sport for longer and increase their enjoyment levels while learning the game. Many clubs have excellent junior programmes which aim to give children the ability to learn the game to a competent level before putting them into Interclub teams. This often occurs during the week after school or on Saturday mornings where a growing coaching network is creating progressive programmes to ease players into a sport that they can play for their whole life. Over 350 teams of at least four play in grades from 9’s to under 20’s each week, and the fast growing size of competitions in the surrounding areas of North Canterbury, Malvern and Ellesmere is leading to Country courts being as busy as Town courts throughout the week. At the top end of each age groups, interest in Tournament play is beyond where it was pre-quakes with a staggering 30 per cent increase in numbers in the recent Tennis Canterbury Junior Champs – as well as

conventional draws where you could face your own “Federer” in the first round, graded and club tournaments to provide similar ability competitions which are also scheduled throughout the year. Every holidays, there are Tennis Canterbury-organised tournaments and over the school holidays wherever in the country you are there’s likely to be a Junior Tennis Tournament happening. Within our region events in Ashburton, Blenheim and Nelson create a great first time tournament experience, and this winter a Sunday club circuit was established which will ideally become a fixture on the calendar.

Last season saw just one national doubles title claimed by a Cantabrian, with Jamie Garbett getting closest to an individual title when he finished runner up in the Boys 12’s Nationals at Wilding Park in January. This upcoming season sees Christchurch hosting the National 16’s Individual and Teams events in January with plenty of other great tournament opportunities set to give our athletes the best possible opportunity to be ready to take on the rest of New Zealand at their respective Nationals. There’s plenty of variety in the competitions currently offered, with more on the horizon as the sport tries to find better ways to meet its players’ needs for relevant competitions that suit their aspirations and fit into their lifestyle.

ach weekend senior interclub teams over various abilities stride onto the court to do battle with rivals from other clubs. For some, it’s the continuation of a rivalry that’s been years in the making; for others it’s the opportunity to come up against a fresh opponent and use all the skills and tactics they can muster to give their team vital points in the competition. There’s plenty of variety in the competitions currently offered, with more on the horizon as the sport tries to find better ways to meet its players’ needs for relevant competitions that suit their aspirations and fit into their lifestyle. In addition to the elite Premier grades this year at least six divisions of Men’s teams made up generally of eight teams of four have great competition between players of like ability. With Z Energy Wilding Park now having the capacity to host more matches, it’s aimed to give all teams the ability to come together as a grade and play at one of Christchurch hallowed (if not bruised) iconic sporting venues. Three grades of divisional interclub are this year offered for women and there also 25 mixed teams who enjoy that format of play. Most clubs have club play on a Saturday

afternoon – this is a chance for players from the same club to mix in social organised games at their own place with all the trimmings of a great Kiwi Summer Sports club – afternoon teas, social functions and, to reward the players’ efforts, well stocked and affordable bars and canteens. Groups of players often develop set times to play that suit everyone and midweek organised play is common among most clubs.

ot only do plenty of players at Secondary School take part in Tennis Canterbury’s Interclub competitions for their club, each Wednesday during the summer months both individual and interschool tennis is becoming increasing popular. The competition is run by Secondary School Sport Canterbury and before

Christmas individual titles are decided, and then the emphasis switches to the teams event with prizes spots in South Island and National Finals up for grabs. This season also sees an event in late November for years 9 and 10 students to be played at Z Energy Wilding Park and best of all for the players – it’s in school time!
